Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours)

Gain an appreciation of the way in which research informs the practice of medicine.

This course offers medical students and graduates an in-depth understanding of research in a variety of areas such as biomedical science, public health, clinical medicine and medical education. You can choose from an array of research streams and match your interest to the respective projects.

You’ll be embedded in a research setting with renowned researchers, and exposed to various technologies and research methodologies from a wide range of clinical and laboratory settings. Throughout the course, you’ll learn skills relating to data analysis and the communication of scientific ideas in oral presentations and a written thesis.

Course Structure

The is a full-time two-semester degree by research program where you’ll undertake research activities under the guidance of a dedicated supervisor. Over the course of the year, you’ll work on a literature review, minor thesis, and oral and poster presentations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you’ll be able to:

  • identify, retrieve, interpret and critically review the clinical and scientific literature in their field
  • demonstrate advanced knowledge and technical skills in their chosen area of research
  • develop, apply, integrate and generate clinical and/or scientific knowledge to analyse challenges and to develop effective solutions
  • generate, organise, analyse and interpret clinical and/or scientific data using theoretical, experimental and computational approaches
  • communicate ideas and results effectively to diverse audiences and in a variety of written and oral formats
  • demonstrate the ability to work independently to undertake a scientific literature review and to prepare presentations
  • demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively to design, develop, implement and analyse a research project
  • exercise personal, professional, ethical and social responsibility as a global citizen.

The biomedical science research project provides you with a higher level of experience in independent analysis and research in your chosen field of expertise, and brings together the clinical and biomedical perspectives. Additionally, you’ll be able to further develop your skills in oral and written communications, presentation and collaboration.

Entry Requirements

This course is only available to medical students who have successfully completed at least the first three years of the undergraduate medical program at Monash University with a credit (60%) average.

If you satisfy the entry requirements, you make take leave from your course to pursue special studies in a discipline area, offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, in order to qualify for admission into this honours course.

Applications from intercalating medicine students or graduates of other universities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

You must also satisfy Monash University’s English language requirements.
